Lemi is a Pan-Africanist to the core, and believes strongly in breaking down barriers between Africans everywhere. He believes it is important to spotlight great African leaders and their ideals, both to carry on their legacies with younger generations who can draw pride and strength from them, and to combat the prevalence of colonial misinformation. For years, he has included portraits of these leaders in each new release and exhibition as part of a series of bright and empowering works titled “Iconicity.” This is the latest in that series.

Tomas Sankara served as the President of Burkina Faso from 1983-1987. His tenure as President saw him institute a swathe of egalitarian policies which espoused marxist, anti-imperialist and collaborative ideals, earning him a position as a bastion of modern Pan-Africanism. Known as ‘Africa’s Che Guevara’, he is responsible for building schools, distributing vaccines to millions of Burkinabé children and for renaming the country from its colonial name to one of prestige, beauty and pride— Burkina Faso, meaning ‘the Land of Incorruptible People.’
