Created for use as a cover for the Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble’s fourth Album ‘Under the Tree’, this collage piece pulls together a plethora of visual references to race and its role in the global conversation, visualising the chaotic and fragmented socio-political environment of the US in the mid-2010s. The piece, much like the album, references (amongst other things) the story of the Jena Six trial and the murder of Trayvon Martin, both tragic incidents that acted as a flashpoint for discussion around contemporary race relations and spurred protests across the nation in its wake.
Lemi’s anti-imperialist message continues in this piece with explicit references to weapons of mass destruction, genocide, the downfall of human rights, and climate disaster. ‘Under the Tree’ raises existential questions about the future of humanity and our shared global experience.
