Lemi served as Fela’s Art Director and Brand Manager for the majority of his career, and is responsible for many of the iconic covers which we remember gracing the sleeves of his singles and albums.
This painting was created for Knitting Factory Records, to be used as the cover for an anthology series of Fela’s vinyl represses which they produced back in the 2010s. The quote comes from another Fela exhibition in Paris, which Lemi was visiting at the time the piece was commissioned, and which struck a chord with his Pan African ideals. Lemi believes that before anything we are African, and that is something to be celebrated and uplifted. He feels this message to be especially poignant in today’s climate, because as globalisation erodes our borders and cultural markers it is important to maintain a fierce pride in our shared identity.
